У моей бабушки было амплуа опекунши. Ей нужно было постоянно о ком-то заботиться, брать на себя чужие проблемы. То она приводила в дом кого-то кормить, то собирала все мои игрушки и отдавала детям дворников, то выносила матрасик бомжу, спавшему на нашей лестнице. Подруги у неё тоже были соответствующие: всех она опекала, всем помогала. У подруг же было амплуа мучениц и страдалиц.
Одна из таких приятельниц, математик, преподаватель вуза, имела амплуа вечно болеющей, вечно лечащейся дамы. Звали её почему-то Менделевна. Эта самая Менделевна страдала чем-то хроническим, вялотекущим, поэтому она имела все шансы дожить до глубокой старости, как, между прочим, и случилось. Лечилась она только частным образом, у известных профессоров, причём лекари навещали её только на дому. Жила мученица в коммуналке, это, конечно, было реальное мучение, приглашать туда врачей было неудобно, поэтому для визитов бабушка предложила использовать нашу трёхкомнатную квартиру.
Днём, когда все взрослые были на работе, Менделевна приходила к нам, бабушка стелила белоснежную простыню на дедушкин диван в кабинете, Менделевна ложилась, закатывала глаза и ожидала профессора.
Врачи всегда талантливо исполняли свои роли: они были вальяжны, ласковы и излучали оптимизм. У них - своё амплуа.
Меня запирали в спальне, которая отделялась от кабинета стеклянной раздвижной стеной. Стена была закрыта портьерой, там был мой наблюдательный пункт. Именно там я осваивала амплуа врача. Потому что амплуа больного мне совсем не нравилось.

Этот самый слоноподобный профессор увидел меня в прихожей и сказал:"Какой толстый ребёнок! Вот вам пилюли - давайте девочке через каждые два часа, живо похудеет!" Так вот "походя полечил", обидев этим бабушку, которая считала мою полноту и румянец своим личным достижением и признаком несокрушимого здоровья.
И пусть Менделевна ест сомнительные лекарства, если хочет. Ребёнку это не нужно.
Профессор был признан шарлатаном и больше не приглашался.
Когда бабушка тяжело заболела, Менделевна даже не навестила её, не то амплуа, не та роль.
А когда бабушка умерла, "подруга", казалось, навсегда исчезла из нашей жизни.
Но вот несколько лет назад раздался телефонный звонок. Старческий голос в трубке: "Наташа? Это ты? У мена что-то изменился запах мочи..." Дальше - нескучные подробности. Боже, это же Менделевна!
