Опередив будильник, Юрка вбежал в комнату, выплескивая на выдохе: Папа! Папа! Умер! Он обрушился на кровать, вниз лицом. Его трясло. Я пытаюсь сесть и преодолеть пропасть между сном и явью. Явь оказывается страшнее. Не ощущаю своего тела. Гулкая пустота внутри – и только одно слово бьется с частотой пульса – бред, бред, бред… Резко встаю, чтобы восстановить собственную плоть в границах бытия. Ищу валидол, делю таблетку пополам, одну часть Юрке, другую - себе. Откуда-то издалека тянется мелодия телефонного звонка. Юрка вскакивает и бежит на звук. Я, с трудом передвигая ноги, бреду за ним. Время движется мне навстречу, не задевая. Юрка сидит на полу у окна, говорит тихо: «еще не рассвело, звезды видно… а я ему не позвонил вчера, пожелать спокойной ночи. А если бы позвонил, разве это что-нибудь изменило?»
Дом просыпался медленно, поскрипывал и похлопывал дверьми, журчал водой, шипел чайником - все повторяли привычные действия, водили щеткой по зубам и полотенцем по физиономии – но что-то изменилось.

Организация похорон, машина в больничный морг, оформление свидетельства о смерти, заказ отпевания – все это суетливое действо вокруг того, кто еще вчера был жив, проходило мимо… А нам досталась самая тяжелая участь – в ожидании сидеть вокруг стола. Молчания накопилось столько, что оно выдавливало воздух, и становилось нестерпимо тесно, до хруста в ребрах. Единственной отдушиной была курилка; тем, кто оказался свободен от дурной привычки, на этот раз повезло меньше. Хотелось совершать какие-то бессмысленные действия, куда-то ехать, кому-то звонить… Юрка сидел на корточках на стуле – "я не хочу похорон, кладбища, поминок… Ему это все не нужно». - Да, Юрка, да… Только это все нужно тем, кто остался: резать салаты, копать мерзлую землю, пить водку – чтобы почувствовать себя живыми, чтобы выгнать небытие изнутри, чтобы собственное тело перестало казаться оболочкой.
